When visiting the dentist, X-rays are a necessary element to take a closer look at your tooth and jaw health during an examination. Some people are curious about the safety of dental X-rays. Read on to learn more about X-rays, including how they work and how Summit Family Dentistry keeps our patients safe!
How Dental X-Rays Work
Traditional dental radiography was created in the 19th century. Traditional X-rays used radiation to capture an image on film, which was then assessed by doctors. Most dentists, including those at Summit Family Dentistry, now utilize digital X-rays instead of traditional ones. Digital X-rays produce almost-instant imaging results that can be digitally uploaded after the X-ray is taken. Because it takes a shorter amount of time to take the imaging, patients are exposed to much less radiation.
Why Use Dental X-Rays?
Dental X-rays are a necessary tool to help our dentists provide the best possible preventive care and restorative treatments. They are used to see all kinds of things that can’t be seen with the naked eye.
- Decay beneath or beside teeth
- Infections in the tooth’s roots and gums
- Jawbone loss
- Positions of teeth that are hidden
- And more!
Who Needs Dental X-Rays?
Both children and adults may need dental X-rays. The X-rays help with diagnosis and treatment for issues that lay beneath the surface and can’t be seen otherwise. Dental X-rays catch issues that would otherwise go undiagnosed. They also help our dentists plan necessary treatment to ensure the best outcome.
Are X-Rays Safe?
The answer is yes. Even “old fashioned” traditional X-rays were considered safe. The minor amount of radiation they emitted was small compared to the radiation people are exposed to from other man-made and natural sources. And digital X-rays are even safer because the patient is exposed to much less radiation. In spite of this, when taking a digital X-ray, your dental technician will place a lead apron on you to shield you from any radiation.
