Different Types of Dental Sedation
At Summit Family Dentistry, we offer four sedation dentistry options: nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia.
For nitrous oxide, you wear a comfortable nose mask and breathe in the gas. You’ll become relaxed and your limbs may feel a little heavy but you’ll remain awake and able to talk to us. When we remove the mask, the effects will quickly wear off.
Oral conscious sedation is given in the form of a prescription pill, which you take a set time before your appointment. You’ll still be responsive during treatment but you’ll likely feel drowsy and experience some brain fog. You will need someone to drive you home.
IV sedation is administered directly into your bloodstream and is stronger than nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. While IV sedation doesn’t induce unconsciousness like general anesthesia, you will be deeply relaxed and may fall asleep on your own. You will have little to no memory of your appointment. These types of sedation are good for longer, more complex treatments.

Dental sedation is safe and effective for most patients. Before recommending any type of sedation, our team will carefully consider your health and medical history, including any medications you’re taking. Variable Cost of Sedation
The out-of-pocket expense for dental sedation depends on what kind of sedation you choose and if your dental insurance offers coverage for sedation. When we’re discussing what option will work best for your situation, we’ll go over the estimated costs and your financial options. We accept cash and credit cards, dental insurance, FSAs, and HSAs. We also offer an in-house dental membership club for uninsured or underinsured patients.
