3 Signs You May Have TMJ Issues

There are different kinds of dental pain, such as a throbbing toothache, sudden pain from getting a tooth knocked out during a sports game, and chronic pain that can come from TMJ disorder, or temporomandibular joint disorder.

TMJ disorder is when that joint right where your skull connects to your jaw isn’t functioning properly. This can occur because of damage, injury, inflammation, and/or arthritis. It can be very uncomfortable! Here are three signs that you may have TMJ disorder:

  1. Frequent Headaches
  2. There are so many different reasons why you might get a headache and TMJ disorder is one of them. Tension in your jaw muscles and the subsequent pressure being put on your joints can cause frequent headaches. This pain can even radiate into your neck, back, and arms.

  3. Jaw Pain
  4. When your TMJ isn’t working properly, it can cause facial pain. You might notice this the most when you’re eating or when you’re talking. It can even occur when you’re yawning since any movement that requires that specific joint can become a source of discomfort.

  5. Ear Pain
  6. Your TMJ isn’t far from your ears, so it’s possible that you may develop pain in your ear or even clogged ears because of the disorder. It’s easy to write that off as something to do with allergies or an infection. However, when ear pain is occurring quite regularly, regardless of what season it is or what medication you may be taking, then TMJ disorder might be the culprit.
