Dental Emergency Preparedness Tips

Whether it’s a sudden toothache, a knocked-out tooth, or a broken crown, being prepared for a dental emergency and having a plan in place can make a significant difference in preserving your oral health. Here are some tips to help you navigate dental emergencies with more confidence:

Handle a Knocked-Out Tooth with Care

If a permanent tooth gets knocked out, time is of the essence. Gently pick up the tooth by the crown (its chewing surface) and avoid touching the root. Rinse it gently with water or milk if it’s dirty, but do not scrub or rub it with a cloth or towel.

Try reinserting it into the socket and holding it in place with a clean cloth or gauze. If that’s not possible, place it in a container with milk or your saliva. Get to the dentist immediately for the best chance of saving your tooth.

Know Your Dentist’s Contact Information

Have your dentist’s contact information readily available so you can call them for guidance if you experience a dental emergency. Summit Family Dentistry offers same-day emergency dentistry! Additionally, keep the contact information for your local urgent clinic for emergencies outside your dentist’s available hours.

Create a Dental First Aid Kit

Include items like clean gauze, disposable gloves, a small container with a secure lid, over-the-counter pain relievers, dental wax, and an extra toothbrush and container of dental floss. This kit can help you manage pain and minimize tissue damage until you can see a professional.

Stay Calm

Staying calm is key in any emergency situation. Keeping a clear head allows you to assess the situation and take necessary actions, such as calling your dentist! Practice deep breathing, meditation, and yoga to keep your baseline anxiety and stress levels lower.
