What to Do Before & After Root Canal Treatment

We understand that an upcoming root canal procedure can feel intimidating. With these tips, we hope to help you feel more ready and less anxious about your treatment and your recovery!

How to Prepare for Your Root Canal Treatment

Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for a full 24 hours before your procedure. These substances can impair your body’s ability to fight infection, and some can make you more susceptible to bleeding.

Take ibuprofen, an anti-inflammatory medication, a couple of hours before your procedure. This can help you get ahead of the pain, discomfort, and swelling that is likely to occur after the procedure.

We want you to feel as relaxed as possible during your treatment. Discuss your dental sedation with our team before your scheduled visit. Additionally, wear comfortable loose-fitting clothes and arrive early for your appointment.

Plan to have a loved one accompany you home after your procedure while the anesthesia wears off.

What to Do After Your Procedure

Allow yourself the time to get plenty of rest. Avoid strenuous activities, such as lifting, bending, and vigorous exercise.

Eat soft foods, drink plenty of water, and take medications as directed by your doctor. Keeping your body fueled and properly hydrated aids in the recovery process. If your doctor prescribes antibiotics, keeping up with these medications is paramount in protecting yourself from infections.

Keep up with your oral care routine. You’ll need to be gentle around the area of treatment, but staying on top of brushing and flossing helps to reduce the amount of bacteria present in your mouth so you can avoid infection.
