What is it?

It is a type of cancer that appears as a growth or sore in the mouth that does not go away. It includes cancer of the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, palate, sinuses, and throat. Oral cancer can be life threatening if not diagnosed in the early stages.

What are Common Symptoms?

  • Swelling, lumps or bumps, rough spots or eroded areas on the lips, gums, or other areas in the mouth
  • White or red patches in the mouth
  • Unexplained bleeding, numbness, loss of feeling, or pain in the face, mouth or neck
  • Hoarseness, sore throat, change in voice
  • Ear pain
  • Dramatic weight loss

What Can I Do To Prevent It?

  • Avoid tobacco use
  • Limit alcohol use
  • Get vaccinated against HPV
  • Maintain healthy weight and be active
  • Commit to maintaining a proper oral hygiene
