How Do I Care for My Dental Implants?

If you’ve taken the time and effort to replace your missing teeth with dental implants, we’re going to assume that you want them to last as long as possible. While dental implants may be permanently placed and often last a patient a lifetime, they’re not indestructible and can sometimes require replacement depending on their wear and tear. To ensure a long life for your dental implants, it’s important that you take the proper steps to care for them.

Keep Up Routine Dental Care

The good news is that much of what you need to do to take care of your dental implants is the same as what you need to do to take care of your other teeth. This is actually one of the benefits of getting implants over another option like dentures! In other words, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush all around your implant twice a day. You should also use a low-abrasive toothpaste so you don’t damage your implant. If you’re not sure what brand to get, feel free to contact us and we’ll give you some recommendations.

Consider Using a Water Flosser

While it’s great to continue using traditional dental floss to clean the spaces in between your teeth, you may consider getting a water flosser as well. Sometimes called a water pik or oral irrigator, a water flosser shoots a jet of water to effectively clean those small gaps around your implant. This dental tool makes it easier to keep bacteria from developing in those hard-to-reach crevices.
